A NPC or Non-Player Character is a character that is controlled by an artificial intelligence. They can interact with the players, by talking to them with a pre-set dialogue tree, or by fighting them. They can also, most of the times, be robbed or healed by the players. Some are important Merchants.
Some of them can also be hired as mercs, or enslaved as slaves and then commanded by player.
