Your character's limb was heavily damaged and is broken. There are different penalties for each crippled limb. All kinds of cripples can be healed using the doctor skill or by medics in cities. An injury will cause the Injured indicator to appear on-screen in the upper left corner. You can hover your cursor over this to see what injuries you have.

Eye damaged

This means your character has been seriously hit in one or both of your eyes. This affects your Perception.

Your Perception is lowered to one which means you have a very limited field of view - 23 hex. Your chance to hit a target is also lower than the chance you would normally have without crippled eyes.

Crippled right/left arm

Your character's right/left arm has been severely hurt, and cannot function well. If one arm has been crippled, you cannot use two-handed weapons. If both arms have been crippled, you cannot attack with weapons.

With one arm crippled your character cannot use two-handed weapons.

Crippled right/left leg

Your character has crippled right/left leg.

With one leg crippled, your character cannot run in Real-Time combat; in Turn-Based combat one hex move costs 2 AP. With both legs crippled your character moves very slowly in RT, 1 hex at a time stopping in each hex; in TB combat, one hex move costs 4 AP.
