All local maps (playable maps) have Exit Grids. Typically, Exit Grids are darker places usually just outside the intended playable border of the map, that allows characters to leave the map behind and get back onto the world map. However, not all Exit Grids lead to the world map. Some Exit Grids link one local map to another local map. When a character enters Caves for example, he runs up the cave entrance on an outdoor map, and into the mouth of a cave where there is an Exit Grid. The outdoor map unloads as the cave interior map loads, and the character finds himself inside the cave, standing very near an Exit Grid that leads back outside.
Exit Grids surround the entire outer border of some maps, but are only found on the lower edge of others. Sometimes a map will have an Exit Grid on the left and right edges only, or bottom and top. Major cities are often divided into areas that connect only via smaller Exit Grids.
Exit Grids are on all types of local maps, including:
- City maps, and all other public locations
- Quest maps
- All maps of Random Encounters
- Special Encounter maps
- Private locations like Tents, Safe Houses, and Bases
- All other playable maps

Being in Combat prevents characters from using Exit Grids. So in Real-Time mode, if a character is attacked while running for the Exit Grid, he won't be able to escape to the world map at first, without running down the Combat timer. You can however, run a character through an Exit Grid while trying to exit a map, hoping enemies do not attack you for those seconds, so you can exit.
NOTE: The same is true when clicking a vehicle to exit the map - it won't work while combat mode is active.
In Turn-Based mode however, stepping into an Exit Grid area at any time will immediately allow a character to exit that map. Clicking a vehicle will also allow characters to exit a local map.
