A new comprehensive startup guide is being planned. This page could be used now, as an Express Version of the full guide, but only down to "STOP". This is still being tested and changed.

The intention is to enhance a new player's startup experience, first by providing a structured route to start a lead-in character. The priority is staying alive as you get stronger. You start in the Hub area with easy tasks and a low risk of Death. You get stronger and then go north and abroad. You'll return with a car and use it to get more Levels and earn a lot more Caps. You'll buy Skill Books, get many Support Perks, establish a base, set up a network of private locations all over the map, recruit some followers, and explore tougher quests. Then you'll power-level additional characters and re-roll them into combat specialists.

Each additional character levels a lot more quickly than your first. A leveling build will be used to send new characters straight to your base, grab a pile of gear and a vehicle, all prepared in advance by the lead character. Proceed to power-level by hunting in the desert until you reach a target level. Then Re-Roll into a combat specialist.

Description, Advice, Config Stuff

  • Go to forum, find and get FallCraftPlus.zip, set that up, close/re-launch client
  • Set combat mode to Real-Time (trust me) by using the in-game ~combatmode rt command
  • The XP and Caps targets shown here will not always match exactly what you have in-game. It will be close, but it will not match exactly.

The First Character Build

7.1.10.3.8.10.1, Good Natured + Heavy Handed. Tags: Close Combat, Science, and Outdoorsman This is just your lead character, a combat-capable worker who will support your expansion. Additional characters will be combat specialists.

Login, and then...

  • Skip Lander's Point, get 2 quests from Startled Caravan Driver (all dialogue option 1 until done), get waterhole 50xp, exit to map
  • Press "P" twice to open your Pip-Boy and view your quests

  • In the nearby tent, talk with Dan twice to swap shovel for Knife (+100xp), run across the street and gather fibers, max 180
    • This guide assumes you only get 96 fibers because other people harvest these fields too
  • Run up street and talk with Joe Kelly standing in the street (137xp) and ask about Custos (82xp +a few items)
  • Move Boxes for 250 Caps, +7 Hub Reputation, and 330xp, exit to map
  • Enter Hub's Old Town and note the layout:
    • Warehouse and Jacob's building on top, Workbench building at end of street
    • Tannery in the middle, L-shaped building behind it, and a scrapyard area to far right
  • In Old Town, get 3 more quests:
    • No Child Left Behind, from little girl in front of Tannery
    • Find the Sad Wife's Missing Husband, from Sad Wife in L-shaped building
    • Jacob's Gun Runner Delivery (ask where Gun Runners are located to highlight it on world map
  • Go to last building at end of street where there is a Workbench
  • Use Workbench to craft 36 ropes (+396xp), slow-walk to Tannery
  • Sell your 36 ropes to Claire, 12 at a time (+1650xp) +some items, +Caps, Level 3
  • Choose Adrenaline Rush and distribute Skill Points: Science 100 and OD 92

  • Sometimes you get a Tool from Claire, but not always. You need a Tool. Either get more fiber and craft more rope, or...
    • There is a building just inside the main entrance where you can buy a Tool from a Toolmaker
  • With a Tool, search-n-Scavenge Old Town for items and resources, but drop Junk if you become overweight
    • Press Control+1 and Control+2 to drop ceilings and walls to see better
    • Search 27 unlocked containers for items, and Scavenge 38 nodes for resources (check the pool table too!)
      • You get 2 attempts to Scavenge per node, to find raw materials. Some containers are locked - skip those
    • When you find Spiked Knuckles, arm them in Slot 1. When you find a Radio, enable reception on channel 0
    • Also keep: 1 Tool, all hides and pelts, 1 Hatchet, 1 Crowbar, and all of these
    • Plan to sell: all ammo, misc items like Elvis paintings, excess tools, excess radios, lockpicks, etc
  • As your Carry Weight reaches its limit, stop and exit Old Town to Market area
  • In Hub Market, get Fruit from tree, Complete Far Go Scout 440xp +120 Caps, and get Hello City quest, Level 5
  • Distribute Skill Points: Repair 50 and 12 Leftover (will use soon)

  • By now you might have enough stuff to make a Folded Tent. Find whatever you need and craft a tent 209xp
  • Return to Dr Burhnefletch, complete Anguished Man +1100xp +tons of Reputation bonuses
  • Exit to map, Enter Hub main, feed Shren to get Way of the Fruit 55xp, talk to priest 550xp, get Old Traditions, Level 6
  • Choose Toughness but do not distribute any Skill Points: 33 leftover

  • Run down street to house above fiber fields, talk with Sad Dog Owner, give RadAway +550xp
  • Put on your new leather helmet, exit Hub, go to top right corner of Zone 30:40, and enter an empty random encounter
  • Inside an empty random encounter, use your Folded Tent. You now have a safe place to keep stuff
  • Drop all items at new tent, except keep Caps, a Tool, all Spears, 1 Knife, 1 Lighter, 3 eparts, and 1 Radio
  • As you search and scavenge, bring stuff back to your tent and build the following 4 piles of items:
    • Quest Pile #1 should have 50 Wood, 15 Junk, 30 Broc and 30 Xander, 6 E-Parts, 60 Fibers, 20 Flint, 80 Fruit
    • Quest Pile #2 should have 30 Wood, 80 Fruit, and 1 HQ Alloy
    • Quest Pile #3 should have a .44 Magnum Revolver, a Shotgun, a Sawed-Off Shotgun, a 10mm Pistol, a Hunting Rifle, a 10mm SMG, 50 rounds each of .44 JHP, 10mm JHP, .223 FMJ, 1 Crowbar and 50 Shotgun Shells
    • Quest Pile #4 should have 5 Iguana-on-a-stick, 12 Broc, 6 Xander, 3 Fruit, 2 Filled Water Bags, and 1 Roentgen Rum
    • Build these piles as you work through the next several levels
  • Go straight north 4 zones to Junktown, avoiding/exiting all encounters along the way
  • Get report from Lex, then go to Powerhouse, talk with Thomas about optimizing the Powerhouse (need a part from Boyce)
  • Go to the building with the Workbench and a hood-less convertible inside
  • Sell spears to Sassy Givens, and ask Boyce about the part for Thomas - he gives it to you for free
  • Buy Small Guns 1 Profession from Boyce, DO NOT read the Small Guns skill book yet!
  • Return to the Powerhouse to give the part to Thomas, and use 1 epart on each of the 3 generators in the back room:
    • Repair the 3 generators by using an epart on each one
    • Then optimize each generator by using/re-using your Science skill over and over until success
    • Then click the power switch on each generator to power it up
  • Report back to Thomas the good news about the generators working again 1375xp +Caps
  • Ask Thomas about fixing the Mr Handy robot in the back room
  • From the Powerhouse, run to boxing ring west of Skum Pitt, talk with Ronnie about the Band 275xp
  • Exit Junktown north, and head south 5 zones past Hub and enter Gunrunners 150xp
  • Go inside and tell Marshal you want practice punching people in the face (+10 CC)
  • Now read the Guns-n-Bullets Skill Book you received from Boyce for +10 Small Guns Skill
  • Speak with Marshal again to progress on Gunrunner Delivery deal with Jacob
  • Distribute Skill Points to make Close Combat 128, and Doctor 16
  • Exit to map, pass over Warehouse, head south and enter New Adytum (+150xp)
  • Talk with Dyer twice: once to get report, and once to ask him to show you the Salvagers' location
  • Search ~19 places all around New Adytum for misc items (a few are underground)
  • Gather as many Fibers as you can from the plant stalks here. This guide assumes you get 60/60
  • Arm Tool in Slot 1 and speak with Montag about his water pump. Try to fix the pump, maybe 990xp +Rep w/LA Citizens
  • Speak with the Hydroponics Supervisor near Montag's pump, to get a job delivering parts to Water Merchants
  • Exit to map, go to Salvagers, talk with bald Regulator to "find Joseph" +550xp
  • Move boxes for Salvagers (+330xp) to get paid 250 Caps, and Scav a few nodes there and exit to map
  • Go to Boneyard Library next, enter (+150xp) and talk with Nicole to get Gunrunner report
  • Check all bookshelves for items, as long as you're not overweight
  • At Library, go downstairs and talk with Therese to become Educated and exit to map
  • If you have a lot of misc items you don't need, stop and sell them in the Boneyard Train Station
  • Next, head west to Tobacco Farm and cut as many Fibers as you can. This guide assumes you get 200/200
  • At Tobacco Farm, gather 48 Tobacco and use the crafting machine there to make 24 Cigarettes
  • Return to your tent, add 60 Fibers (if needed) to your "Quest Pile #1", and drop other crafting resources
  • Bring leftover Fibers, and go back to Hub Old Town: talk with Jacob about Gunrunners
  • Use the Workbench to craft all ropes (1441xp), and sell to Claire - make multiple trips if necessary 5500xp
    • This guide assumes you're able to craft 125 ropes
  • Distribute Skill Points: Close Combat 130, Doctor 36

    • At your earliest convenience, stash your first blueprint for use later
  • Go to the back of the building in the north corner of Junktown, and give 24 "smokes" to the Hackler 1650xp +1200 Caps
  • (Possible attempt at Hippocratic Oath)
  • Return to the Maltese Falcon with a lighter, and talk with Hope on stage to start her quest (A Light in the Darkness)
  • Go to Police Station, speak with Sheriff Hayden, get the victim's name and occupation
  • Speak next with Detective Cwan, then with Detective Spade, then go to Hub's underground bar
  • Speak with Vasquez the bartender, return to Hayden to report the good news +1100xp, Hub Criminals -25
  • Talk with Hope to officially "close the case", and you throw your hat away. Put on your new leather armor!
  • Exit Hub, drop all extra items at your tent, and go visit the lonely Tent in the Wasteland location nearby Hub
  • Get quest from the wife in the tent, to clear the rats from their farm
  • Exit to map, return to Gunrunners, talk with Marshal about the deal with Jacob. Exit to map
  • Head south to New Adytum to deliver the crate of Hydroponic Parts to the supervisor near Montag's pump
  • Now go to the tent family's farm and kill all the rats so they can move back in 1056xp
  • Return to Hub Old Town and speak with Jacob to finalize his deal with Gunrunners +825xp (Hub 244)
  • Talk with Traveling Merchant in Hub's Market, get Gecko Skinning and pay for location of geckos 165xp
  • Return to farm family, tell wife the good news, get folded tent, talk with Cira, something bad happens 1100xp
  • Go to gecko hunting location, drink beer and hunt all geckos with Spiked Knuckles or best HtH weapon 1965xp
    • Make sure you loot at least 20 Meat here, and drop them at your tent the next time you're there
  • Loot containers and return to your tent. Drop extra items here, but bring that metal armor and all gecko pelts back to Hub
  • Enter Hub Old Town, sell Metal Armor to Jacob, and gather eparts
  • Sell pelts to Traveling Merchant, and talk with iguana vendor in Hub to get quest to Find Iguana Pete's Missing Son
  • Gather 15 Junk from a junk barrel in Hub
  • By now you likely found a High Quality Alloy. If not, find one. Scavenge as needed.
  • Go to your tent and get Quest Pile #1. Then go to Junktown mine and speak with the Supervisor inside to gather stuff for him
  • Give 50 Wood to him (gather as needed - use hatchet) and return to supervisor 550xp, Level 9
  • Choose Even Tougher and distribute Skill Points: CC 140 and Traps 38

  • CHECKPOINT
    • Before leaving the Hub area to travel abroad, make sure you're wearing your leather armor and helmet
    • Bring your tools: 2 Tools, a Hatchet, a Knife, 2 Radios, 1 full Water Bag, and 1 First Aid Kit
    • Also bring: Spiked Knuckles armed in Slot 1, a few beers, a Folded Tent and 3 Wood
    • You need 35 Nuka-Colas which you can buy from the working vending machine in the Maltese Falcon
      • These are expensive to buy, so scav and craft a few more Combat Shotguns to sell as needed
    • Bring 20 Meat to exchange for meat jerky later in Modoc
    • You'll be buying a car soon for 15k Caps, so 17k will cover that and some other minor travel expenses
  • Once you have these things, head east to Necropolis, enter Motel, talk with Thrane 1100xp, Level 11

    • HINT: Stand in the vault door to bottleneck the rats so only 1 can bite you at a time
  • Access working computer terminal (no need to use elevator) and run the program 1100xp, Level 12
  • Choose In Your Face! and distribute Skill Points: Doc 92

  • Use Science Skill to harvest at least 3 Electronic Parts while you're there
  • Exit to map, head straight west to Shady Sands. Enter town (+150xp) and talk with Iguana Mikey
  • Get fetch-quest from Buster, and run to the Rawhide Saloon
  • Find Ronald behind Buster's tent, and give him your full Water Bag
  • Run down into the Rawhide Saloon and give a First Aid Kit to Rollo 500xp
  • Speak with Mira twice to: get Buster's smokes, help her pay back a debt
  • Talk also with Nora to deliver a letter for her, and talk with Lenny about Son of Bob
  • Go into town to the water pump building that has computers. Talk with Dorothy twice to deliver Nora's letter
  • Run toward medical research building, but stop in the street to read the billboard and get a note about work on the Westin Ranch
  • Run to medical research building above hospital, and speak with Dr Henry twice to get an assignment
  • Get assignment to set up a deal between Dr Henry and Dr Jubilee at Hospital
  • Run across the street into Dusty's Cantina and deliver money to Dusty
  • Ask Dusty what's on the menu, and eat some bar food +1375xp
  • Go into the hospital and talk with Dr Jubilee about Dr Henry's business proposal
  • Report back to Dr Henry to close their medical arrangement, take no reward and get +770xp
  • Go to the energy gate at the Westin Ranch, talk to guard to get in, arm your Tool and fix the Water Pump there +250xp
  • Go back to the Rawhide and report to Nora (+220xp) and Mira (+825xp)
  • Sell some items to Mira as needed to avoid being overweight, and speak with Merk about The Wipestress
  • Return to Buster on your way out of Shady Sands and give him those smokes (+880xp) and +300 Caps
  • Exit to map, go next-door to NCR Train Station, talk with Ranger Captain +2200xp and put on that new armor!
  • Now find the location you got from Merk, go there and defeat The Wipestress, and return to Merk 1550xp
  • From Shady Sands, hike over to their mine and give 1 Tool and 1 Radio to Leurick at the bottom by some rocks 550xp

travel northwest to Broken Hills in Zone 29:17, get Strong Back perk from Francis +23 Carry Weight

  • Exit to map, go straight north 11 zones to Vault City, go into clinic, get Medical Investigation quest from Doctor
  • During daylight hours (check Pip-Boy), get a Day Pass, and access the terminal in the small Information Center 2200xp
    • You may have to wait until morning if you're there in the middle of the night, so Scavenge or take a break
  • Go to Gecko, enter Scrapyard, talk with Skeeter twice: about Elmer (read the data tape), and about a part for your Vault 1100xp
  • Re-enter Gecko main, run into The Harp bar and buy 1 Roentgen Rum from Wooz
  • Exit town, enter Vault City's Train Station, buy 3 tickets, wait for/board train to Shady Sands (NCR)
    • You may have to wait a while for the train. If you have time, talk with 4 people there as part of this quest
  • When you arrive in NCR Train Station, hurry in talking with 4 people about the Medical Investigation, and board train to Boneyard
  • At Boneyard Train Station, hurry in talking with 4 people, and board train to San Francisco 150xp
  • At San Fran Train Station, talk with 4 people, and then exit to map, enter town via Tanker entrance 150xp
  • Run into bar and talk with Charlie about the Wasteland Band, and exit to map 275xp
  • Travel east past the mining site nearby, and move 7 zones north by 2 east to Gordon's Gas Station
  • Enter Gordon's place and get Ranger perk, then exit to map

  • Go back to car, drive back to Redding, park nearby to town, go in "South Side" on foot, to hospital
  • Tell Doc Johnson to stop selling Jet (990xp) and talk with him again to get list of addicts for Renesco
  • Return to Renesco in New Reno and give him the list of addicts from Doc Johnson
  • Return to Dangerous Dan in Redding's mining district to complete his quest 2000xp
  • Exit Redding, drive 5 zones diagonally northwest to Den, find a random, empty place near to the town to park car
  • Build your next tent which is really a Safe House with a workbench. Your car is there. Add 3 Wood to upgrade fire
  • Exit your Safe House on foot and enter town via East Side, go into Mom's Diner, eat food 1375xp
  • Run up and into the Slaver's Guild, talk to Metzger twice, give him 1 Nuka-Cola (300xp)
  • Exit town, return to car, drive 3 zones diagonally northwest to find Klamath, enter Trapper Town
  • Run up to trappers near the burning barrel, and ask a child there about Light Step perk
  • Run south through the building and speak with Meloy inside to get Toxic Caves location, but exit dialogue early - before tanker quest
  • Exit town and re-enter Klamath "Downtown", and give 5 Beers to Aldo, the town greeter
  • Go into the Buckner Bar, give 5 Caps to Whiskey Bob, and get some work from him
  • Exit town, drive back to The Den, enter via main entrance, and go into Becky's place
  • Arm your tool in Slot 1, talk to Becky and try to fix her craps table 900xp
  • Find Frankie in Den's East Side, and speak with him about the deal for Whiskey Bob
  • Return to Klamath and speak with Whiskey Bob again 750xp
  • Exit town, drive straight back toward Vault City. Run to Tannery, talk with Balthas about getting more Brahmin Hides
  • Exit Tannery, run down near Exit Grid, talk with Grisham about getting more hides for Balthas
  • Have Grisham exchange 20 Meat for 10 Jerky
  • Exit town, return to car, drive back to Vault City and park near town
  • If you did not talk with 4 people at the Vault City Train Station, go there and do that next
  • Return to the clinic in Vault City, and complete the Medical Investigation 4125xp +900 Caps
  • Go to the shack there with the Workbench and speak with Ed the Brahmin Dealer about hides for Balthas
  • Careful to follow their strict daytime-only rules, use your Day Pass to enter the gate in Vault City again
    • If it's a long way to daytime, go search bookshelves in Gecko and sell items between there and VCity
  • Find Councilwoman McClaire in the FLC bank and dialogue about the main quest 1320xp
  • While you're in Vault City, check a few vendors (including the bar) for 50 rounds of both .223 FMJ, and 10mm JHP ammo
  • From Vault City, drive back to Modoc, park nearby, return to Balthas in the Tannery 900xp
  • From Modoc, drive straight south to New Reno in Zone 20:18, and enter 2nd Street and go into the Shark's Club
  • Inside the Shark's Club, use the stairs to go up 2 floors, talk with Bishop, then exit Reno to map
  • Re-enter Reno via the Gas Station, go into garage building, find T-Ray and buy a Buggy vehicle - click car to exit town
  • Drive west into desert to new map location, and park car nearby
  • Drink a beer if you have one, arm best HtH weapon to Slot 1, and go into quest location, defeat your enemies 1650xp
  • It's time to head home - return to Buggy, and drive back to Hub, park at your Hub tent
  • Enter Hub via main entrance, go to church and report to Fr O'Shaughnessy 3850xp, Level 14

  • Exit Hub, head northwest a few zones to Junktown mine, and build a tent next to it
  • Exit to map, head over to Necropolis, enter Watershed and report to Elmer 3300xp
  • Go back to Hub, enter Hub's Market, go into bar and talk again with Mick about the band 1265xp
  • Enter The Heights in Hub and pay the initiation fee to join the gang -200 Caps
  • Recruit 4 Street Punks for them. Use gecko pelts and fiber to craft 3 more leather jackets if necessary
    • Find them in alleys in Old Town, Water Merchants, and Market, and find one under the Maltese Falcon
    • Talk to each one twice to get the right dialogue option
  • Report back to gang leader 1100xp and get next task to bribe the police with 1200 Caps
  • Tell Johnny you have the money, and go to Sheriff Hayden and hand him the bribery money -1200 Caps
  • Report to Johnny 1100xp and get next task to provide the weapons and ammo for their heist
  • The last thing to get for the gang to run their heist might be the .223 FMJ ammo
    • Find some for sale by any of the area vendors: Jacob, Beth, Mitch, Taylor, GR, Salvagers
    • Alternately, watch out for anyone selling Advanced Gunpowder so you can craft your own .223 FMJ
  • Return to your tent or car, gather up all the gear for the gang to do their heist, and go to Hub Heights
  • Tell Johnny you have all the weapons and ammo they need 825xp
  • Run the heist 1430xp
  • Go into the Hub Post Office and speak with the Hub Chef about You Call This Soup?, Level 15

  • You need to craft a sledgehammer next, so Scavenge around Hub enough to find 1 Wood and 1 Metal Part
  • Exit Hub and go to your Safe House at Junktown mine, drop all gear except Radio, craft 1 Sledgehammer, and hit the mine
  • Work the mine until you have 60 or more Iron and 60 or more Minerals, and return to your Safe House
    • You will be overweight - that's okay - you don't have far to go
    • You'll probably be short on Junk here, so go into Hub and gather Junk from the barrels
    • Need Wood? Grab a hatchet and go into randoms in Zone 29:36 just a few pixels away until you find the right trees
  • After you're done buying Skill Books, amass 15k extra Caps to get additional crafting professions:
    • Talk with Boyce in Junktown to pay for the 2nd level of Small Guns professional training
    • Go to Salvagers for Armorer 1 & 2
    • Brian in Broken Hills for Energy Weapons 1 & 2
    • Junktown doctor for Doctor 1 & 2
