Background

The M79 is a break-action grenade launcher that functions much like your granddaddy's old shotgun, with a much larger payload. Developed by Springfield in 1961, this weapon first saw action in the Vietnam proxy war with the American forces. It was quickly replaced in subsequent wars with the advent of the underbarrel-mounted grenade launcher, specifically the M203. Soldiers nicknamed it the "thumper" for its unique report created by the ultra-fat 40mm barrel and its cartridge. The M79 was remarkable at the time for being a very versatile, durable, and extremely simple to use artillery system -- the combination of very old-school break-action design and the very (at the time) modern 40mm grenade cartridge resulted in a weapon that takes on all the good features of "good old guns" while keeping its firepower up to date.
