For new players, plan to run a standard set of alternate characters, and don't limit yourself to only one. You'll start with a guy who might build some tents, but you'll want to play with Big Guns too, and eventually try a sniper, and maybe a sneaker. You might join a PvP team and want a tough tank. Everyone should have at least one tanky high-damage fighter, for going on tough team quests.

Your Starting Character

Lead in with a standard Strong Explorer or some version of this. He needs to be tough, and he needs to be an effective fighter as soon as possible to dive into Caves, locker hunting, exploring places and quests, etc. He'll be the one you use to set up a network of Safe Houses all over the map, and likely a private base which becomes your HQ for starting all your additional characters. Recruit NPC followers and lead them all over the map, find Special Encounters and survive solo. This character is a logical choice for whatever crafting needs you'll have, mainly for supplying the rest of your characters. He could have all of the professions, and eventually all of the Blueprints.

A Leveling Build

You'll learn popular leveling methods along the way, often from other players. Then most people plan a specific fighter build with a target level of maybe 60, for example. So you'll want to register a new Character with A Leveling Build first, just to reach that target level sooner, and then Reroll. Your leveling build should have both Loner and Swift Learner.

A High-Damage Tank

One very useful fighter is a tank that does maximum damage. You'll want ST 5, Adrenaline Rush, Toughness, Even Tougher, and two Lifegiver perks to tank some damage on this one. Then Bonus Ranged Damage and More Ranged Damage to impress people with serious damage from a minigun or LSW. Of course Bonus Rate of Attack is a must.

A Fist-Fighter

These are too much fun to pass up. Combine ST 7 and Heavy Handed with a Mega Power Fist, and plan to use Drugs.

Energy Sniper

You've wanted to try being a sniper and laser rifles are not hard to craft. Plan to have Luck 10 though, low ST, strong PE, and use Drugs. You'll want this one to have the crit perks.
