Albert will instruct you to get a Hatchet, and a Sledgehammer so you can obtain the resources necessary to craft your own Knife. He is the instructor and you are the student. Crafting the Knife is your Crafting project. Bring the Knife back to him so he can grade your project.
Press F to open your Fix-Boy, and find what is required to craft a Knife.
NOTE: You can do this as he says, or alternately you can scavenge for the Wood, Junk, and Metal Parts necessary to make your own Knife. Many people prefer Scavenging over classic mining because you get immediate XP as you go.
About the Exit Package
This is one of the many tasks in Lander's Point that adds an item to your Exit Package. You don't get the item immediately; you get it when you leave the camp and head out into the open world by talking with Custos. You can leave at any time, but remember: when you leave the camp, you don't ever go back, and all items in your Inventory are removed at that time and given back to the residents of Lander's Point, including whatever Caps you've accumulated. When you leave, you're given only an Exit Package which consists solely of items associated with the tasks you've completed while staying at the camp.
