This is an excellent quest to help new characters get started, and leads into the Main Quest. Once you reach level 2, look for a new, small location on your map near Hub, but it might be near Shady Sands or Vault City depending which town you visited first at level 2. Go there and find a farming family living in a tent due to their farm being overrun by Rats. Get the quest to help them and you'll be able to see their farm on the map too, a few zones away. Go there, kill the Rats, find some starting items, and report back to the family at their tent. (Watch for Cira once this quest ends.)
WARNING: Both quest locations will disappear at some point - as the start of the main quest-line they just have a longer despawn timer than other Quests - so do not settle there!
Evelyn's husband is Hasso, and their children are Sally and Eric, who each are able to Barter and give some interesting dialogue. Hasso however, seems a bit off his rocker, and offers some strange and curious dialogue which can lead to the Wacky Wasteland quest, which is sometimes called The Evil Campaign.
Requirements
- Appears on map after leaving Vault City, Shady Sands or Hub once you're at least Level 2.

- Appears on map after talking to Father O'Shaughnessy while repeatedly asking him what jobs you can do during the quest Into the Great Wide Open.
Rewards
- Around 900 xp total for killing 12 mutated Rats, depending on your perks.
- 300 xp (xp message not shown)
- A fully loaded Red Ryder BB Gun
- Some basic tools including a Hatchet, Sledgehammer, Knife, and an Old Shovel
- 5 Healing Powders, 2 when you get the quest, and 3 on the shelves in the house.
- A Leather Jacket if you dig up the grave in the back
- A Folded Tent
- 2 Barley
- 1 Rope
- You can begin Blood-Soaked Heroes, the main quest - watch for Cira from Vault 24.
Hints
If you actually do this quest at Level 2, you won't have many Hit Points, and likely have a low fighting skill. It's possible to die in Real-Time, but not as likely in Turn-Based.
There are 12 Rats total: 4 Rats outside the farm house, and 8 inside.
One way to do this quest and survive more easily is to use the Brahmin pen to your advantage. Run up and grab the BB Gun on the ground, and immediately run back down under the pen and shoot the 2 Rats inside the pen. Then, recharge your AP and quickly go inside the pen and close the gate behind you. From inside the pen, shoot the other 2 Rats outside. Once the outside Rats are dead, go behind the farmhouse and look inside through the windows. Press Q to enable your Line-of-Sight, and press A to target the Rats inside. Shoot whichever Rats you can find, in all 3 rooms (Note: shooting through the windows doesn't work anymore since Season 4). When that's done, go the farmhouse door, stop and let your Action Points recharge. Open the door to the farmhouse but stand still and recover those few AP from opening the door. Whatever Rats are remaining will attack you there. You can stand there and fight, or let them chase you back to the Brahmin pen. If you're fast, you can get inside and shut the gate before they block the door. Then shoot them safely from there.
The best and simplest way to complete this quest is to simply craft a weapon and bring it along. By this point, one can easily have made a simple gun or melee weapon, so that might be easier than trying to grab the BB Gun.
