War, war never changes. That's the only thing people know. Life is black and white, and between that there's killing, and lots of blood and tears.

You start by speaking with Detective Stark in the Shady Sands Police Station, but to get the proper dialogue option with him, you might need to have 45 Reputation or more with Hub citizens (or have completed the No Child Left Behind quest). Once you do start this questline with Stark, by getting the proper dialogue, proceed first by going back to Hope in Hub's Maltese Falcon, and recover your fedora, the hat you threw away once Hope's case was closed.

NOTE: The chapters of this questline often send you to random, temporary map locations. The names of these locations are the names of the maps that get semi-randomly chosen each time, and have vague descriptions like "mountain 5" or "Necropolis 2'". Do not expect the map dot names to be obviously related to the quest itself.

Once you recover your hat, return to Detective Stark to get into solving some crimes. He tells you about all these active cases:

Detective Stark is investigating the sex trade problem in Shady Sands

• Beat up a sleazy guy in the Rawhide Saloon to get the gang's location
• Report that to Detective Stark and he'll give the map coordinates

Shell Shock My Hypervigilance

Detective Pint is investigating the case of a little girl who has gone missing for over a week

• Find the right guy in Hub's Old Town, and hold him accountable via dialogue. This highlights a new map location
• Melinda is 12 years old with dark hair, red coat, black boots, blue jeans

The Thousand-Yard Stare

Detective Deckard is investigating half a dozen murders

• Go on patrol with him until...you both hear something!

The Legecy of the Vault Dweller

Detective Gallows is investigating an assassination attempt on President Tandi

• Flash your badge at Fergus in Tandi's building, and talk with Wendell Peterson and Joanna Tibbett
• Flash your badge at Gunther next and talk with Tandi
• Return to Detective Gallows and be on your way to Broken Hills to speak with Marcus
• He gives you a map location to the east, where a large gang of criminals is hiding out
