Getting a Vehicle
There are three options when it comes to purchasing a vehicle in the game. T-Ray in New Reno sells a variety of vehicles. Todd in Junkyard. Your last option for purchasing a vehicle is to trade with another player. The other method is to simply take one, or get lucky enough to find a Special Encounter with one of the ultra-rare vehicles.
You can buy vehicles for smoother travels across the map. Some of them are ready to drive, and some require a working Fuel Cell Controller. Each one has trunk space, a passenger limit, and different rates of Deterioration and fuel consumption. T-Ray in New Reno sells certain vehicles that are ready to drive. You can also trade with other players, or get lucky enough to find a Special Encounter with a Vertibird.

NOTE: Whenever you get vehicle, you should put some spare fuel and a Tool of some kind in the trunk, so you're ready for those awkward moments when you "run out of gas" or your vehicle breaks down and get stuck on the map. Otherwise, it's easy to lose a vehicle, (and maybe everything in the trunk!).

You can buy vehicles from T-Ray in New Reno (Gas Station area, at the north-east). Just talk to him with caps in your inventory and you'll be able to buy a vehicle. The vehicle will spawn right after that near you, in T-Ray's garage, and you'll have a key in your inventory. Each Vehicle Key has a unique key number that matches its vehicle.

Todd in Junkyard
The only other place to get a vehicle from an NPC Merchant is in the Junkyard. In the Junkyard garage you will find an NPC by the name of Todd, that you can talk to. He will tell you that he can fix up a vehicle for you, but he requires a part. He will tell you to come back with a Fuel Cell Controller. After you complete that task and have the caps to pay him, you will be able to buy a new car from him. It will spawn outside the garage and you will have the key in your inventory.
The only other NPC vehicle merchant is Todd in the Junkyard, a location on the coast north of San Francisco. Todd has a garage there and will offer to fix up certain other vehicles for you that T-Ray does not offer, but he requires a Fuel Cell Controller first. Bring the part to Todd along with Caps, and you will be able to buy one of his vehicles. The vehicle you buy from Todd will show up just outside his garage and you will have its Key in your inventory.

Special and Random Encounters
Special and Random Encounters
From time to time you will encounter other players with vehicles or ones lost by their owners. In the more uncommon Special Encounter, you will sometimes find an exceptionally rare vehicle. In either case, the vehicle may need to be lock-picked, the key must be stolen, or simply taken by brute force.
From time to time you might find a dot on the map that you do not recognize, where a player character has parked a vehicle to do some quick shopping in a nearby town for example. Sometimes it's where a bunch of people parked their cars, maybe to go do Town Control. In some cases, they might be abandoned vehicles.
Everyone can use Lockpick to steal these cars, so stay safe and park in your tent or base.

You can also find Special Encounters while traveling in a vehicle. You can, for example, find the Vertibird SE while driving in a car, and you can get back to that location to get your car out after you've flown the vbird out. Some Special Encounters have no parking space available, the Family Grave for example. In this case the encounter will automatically cancel.

Using a Vehicle
With the vehicle's Key in your Inventory, just click on the vehicle, and you'll find yourself on the World Map ready to travel. Players that have tagged you will have an option to follow you, if they are close enough. You can't go to World Map in a vehicle without fuel. Lockpick works also. See Important Notes above.

With the vehicle's key in your inventory, just click on the vehicle to move on the worldmap with it. Players that have tagged you will have an option to follow you, if they are close enough. You can't go to worldmap in a vehicle without fuel. Lockpick works also, see Important Notes above.
* When traveling in a vehicle, make sure you're in Real-Time mode. If you're in RT when you get into a forced encounter, you can quickly escape. If however you're in TB mode, and combat begins, you're stuck in there until combat ends and you're still alive. Driving a vehicle in Turn-Based mode is a good way to lose that vehicle, if you are not fast enough to leave before combat starts.
* If you drive a vehicle into a quest location, which is often done for looting convenience, you're taking a chance, even in RT mode. Quests have timers, and when a quest timer expires, the quest map disappears. Players who might happen to be there when this happens, will suddenly find themselves thrown out to The World map, <span style="color:red">and vehicles will be erased from the server!</span> That means you lose your vehicle and all its trunk's contents. This can be devastating, so take care.

Vehicle Maintenance
Vehicle Maintenance
If your vehicle runs out of fuel it will stop on the world map. To refuel a vehicle, click on it to use the inventory (bag) icon and then select Small Energy Cells or Micro Fusion Cells in your inventory. Alternately, you can refuel a vehicle with Rot Gut if the vehicle has the Rot Gut Engine Upgrade. You will also have to repair it from time to time (Using the Repair skill) with a Tool or Super Tool Kit in your hand.

New Keys
T-Ray will make a copy of your vehicle's Key, for 1k Caps. Just talk to him and select the right option when holding the Key in hand that you want copied. If someone else gets your vehicle's Key, they can drive your vehicle if they can find where you parked it. Some players prefer keyless vehicles for convenience. A vehicle's Key also opens the vehicle's trunk.

Locks and Lockpick
T-Ray will make a copy of your Vehicle Key, for caps. Just talk to him and select the right option when holding a key in hand. If someone else gets your vehicle key, they can drive your vehicle if they find it wherever you parked it. Some players prefer keyless vehicles for convenience. A vehicle's key also opens the vehicle's trunk.
Many players prefer keyless vehicle operation. They use Lockpick skill on a vehicle so the key is no longer needed. The trunk's lock will still be working though, unless you successfully pick that lock too. You can also reset a vehicle's lock by using a Lock item on the vehicle, which produces a new Key (with a new key number). This resets both of that vehicle's locks so the new Key will then work on that vehicle's trunk too.

NOTE: A possible bug has been noted where the trunk of a Lockpicked vehicle cannot subsequently be picked, even with maximum Lockpick skill and a Expanded Lockpick Set. To fix this without GM assistance, use a Lock on the vehicle to reset both locks.

Vehicles give their users the ability to move much faster on the world map. They have to be refueled and repaired from time to time.

Important Notes

 • You can park a vehicle in a random encounter, leave it there and still get back to it from the map (unless someone else finds it and steals it).
 • When you park your car in a random encounter, everyone who is traveling nearby can also find it and take it.
 • Parking in towns is also a bad idea because everyone can Lockpick your car and drive away.
 • To park your care safely, always use private locations such as Bases, Tents, or houses.
 • All vehicles, but carts have max Outdoorsman which overrides the driver's OD skill.
 • Leader's Charisma is ignored when traveling by a car.
 • Vehicles have a different spawn point than characters, and this can be useful, for example, in a Flare Trap.
 • Accessing vehicles is different in Turn-Based than in Real-Time combat.
 • When parked, use Science skill on a vehicle to check its Deterioration, Key number, and fuel level.
 • Use a Tool to improve a vehicle's condition.
 • A vehicle can be Lockpicked, after which its Key is no longer needed to drive it.
 • Vehicle Lockpick protection time in towns: 15 minutes (trunk is always pickable)
 • You can use a Lock on a Lockpicked vehicle to "fix" the vehicle's locks (door, and trunk).
 • Vehicle prices are always the same (per model) when purchased from NPCs.
 • Be careful not to put a vehicle's Keys in its trunk because the key will be locked in that trunk and you'll need to Lockpick the trunk to recover the Key.

Getting a Vehicle

You can buy vehicles for smoother travels across the map. Some of them are ready to drive, and some require a working Fuel Cell Controller. Each one has trunk space, a passenger limit, and different rates of Deterioration and fuel consumption. T-Ray in New Reno sells certain vehicles that are ready to drive. Junkyard Todd sells a different variety of vehicles, over on the coast north of San Francisco, but you'll need a working FCC to buy one of his.

T-Ray, the car salesman in New Reno.

T-Ray in New Reno

You can buy certain vehicles from T-Ray in New Reno (Gas Station area, at the north-east) that do not require you to provide a working Fuel Cell Controller. With Caps in your Inventory, talk with T-Ray and you'll be able to buy a vehicle. The vehicle will show up immediately in T-Ray's garage, and you'll have its Key in your Inventory. Each vehicle Key has a unique key number that matches to the vehicle. That key will allow you to drive the vehicle, and will also allow access to the trunk. So it works for two locks, both of which can be removed with a successfully picking the locks for key-less use.

Junkyard above San Francisco.

Todd in Junkyard

The only other NPC vehicle merchant is Todd in the Junkyard, a location on the coast north of San Francisco. Todd has a garage there and will offer to fix up certain other vehicles for you that T-Ray does not offer, but he requires a Fuel Cell Controller first. Bring the part to Todd along with Caps, and you will be able to buy one of his vehicles. The vehicle you buy from Todd will show up just outside his garage and you will have its Key in your inventory.

Special and Random Encounters

CAUTION

 • When traveling in a vehicle, make sure you're in Real-Time mode.
 • If you drive a vehicle into a quest location, which is often done for looting convenience, you're taking a chance, even in RT mode. Quests have timers, and when a quest timer expires, the quest map disappears. Players who might happen to be there when this happens, will suddenly find themselves thrown out to The World map, and vehicles will be erased from the server! That means you lose your vehicle and all its trunk's contents. This can be devastating, so take care.

Vehicle Maintenance

If your vehicle runs out of fuel in the middle of a drive, it will suddenly stop on the World Map. To refuel a vehicle, click-hold on it to use the Inventory (bag) icon, and then select Small Energy Cells or Micro Fusion Cells in your Inventory. Alternately, you can refuel a vehicle with Rot Gut if the vehicle has the Rot Gut Engine Upgrade. You will also have to Repair it from time to time by using a Tool or Super Tool Kit.

Selling

To sell your car, you need to visit someone who will be interested in this. Talk with T-Ray or Junkyard Todd in the Junkyard or any caravan dealer when holding key to car in hand. Keep in mind that car must be on same map, as car dealer.
